What is BioWave?

The technology used in BioWave devices is a type of neurostimulation that helps reduce pain.

There are several approaches to using neurostimulation in the treatment of chronic pain, including:

  • Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)
  • Interferential therapy (IFT)
  • Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES)

BioWave is different from these other methods because its advanced design features patented pain-blocking technology.

How does BioWave work?

BioWave's proprietary signal-mixing technique delivers two high-frequency alternating currents through your skin into the deeper tissues. There, your body creates new signals from these currents, one of which is a low-frequency electrical field.

The effect of this electrical field is to reduce the activity of C-fibers, which transmit pain signals. Your pain eases significantly, and the results are long-lasting.

What conditions can BioWave treat?

APMI Orthopaedics, Sports Health & Regenerative Medicine uses BioWavePENS® to relieve acute, chronic, and postoperative pain in your lumbar spine (lower back), thoracic spine (upper back), and cervical spine (neck).

More than 70 professional sports teams and 120 major college athletic programs use BioWave to help athletes recover faster and reduce pain from sports injuries.

If your condition is one that could benefit from BioWave, you undergo an initial treatment session to see if you have a positive response.

If you do, and your pain levels decrease, your provider may recommend a course of five or more additional treatments. Each treatment not only provides pain relief in its own right, it could also contribute to a cumulative effect from having multiple treatments.

Why should I consider using BioWave?

There are some notable advantages to using BioWave:

Longer-lasting pain relief

BioWave's electrodes go under your skin, which means the pain-relieving effects penetrate more deeply and last longer.

Improved comfort

The nature of the signals used by BioWave means the treatment is more comfortable than the alternatives, which can cause sensations like tingling. BioWave treatment feels like deep, smooth pressure.

After your initial treatments, you can take advantage of APMI Orthopaedics, Sports Health & Regenerative Medicine's BiowaveHOME® system. This allows you to continue benefiting from the effects of BioWave in the comfort of your home and be in total control of your treatment.
